The Monte Elmo Sesto cable car was first put into operation in February 1981. Back then, it was the most modern of its kind. For nearly 40 years, it carried skiers, hikers and families to the summit of Monte Elmo every day—until everything changed in 2020. In a year marked by changes and reforms, the 3 Zinnen Dolomites ski resort is undergoing its own renovations: the dated cable car is being replaced by the new, detachable premium 10-seater “Helmjet Sexten” gondola lift.
Just six years ago, in 2014, the 3 Zinnen Dolomites ski resort (then called the ‘Sesto Dolomites’) consisted of a mere 50 kilometres of slopes on two mountains. Today, just over half a decade and many courageous decisions later, 3 Zinnen AG has turned the ski area into a little gem. The company itself has expanded into a resort in its own right, too: its assets include five connected skiing mountains, 115 kilometres of slopes, 31 modern cable cars and lifts, five owner-run restaurants, ski and bike rental services and the Punka Service Centre, which is one of the most advanced service facilities in the Alps.
In recent years, the Helmbahn Sesto has increasingly become the bottleneck. Disproportionately long waiting times prevented many skiers from using the sunny valley run to Sexten.
After 83,200 operating hours and 14.5 million passengers transported, the good old Helmbahnl set off on its last journey on
The Helmbahn Vierschach will remain in operation until November 1st. From December 4th, the new 10-seater premium gondola lift Helmjet Sexten, one of the most modern lifts in South Tyrol, will bring ski guests quickly and comfortably from Sexten into skiing pleasure.
Mark Winkler - CEO said “Every new lift we build is special to me. But the “Helmjet Sexten” is a passion project: we have all been waiting for it for many years. In a way, it is the jewel in the crown of the 3 Zinnen Dolomites sports and mountain destination—the last piece in the jigsaw puzzle of investments we made over the course of the past years. We are giving our main entrance in Sesto a massive upgrade: the state-of-the-art facilities will offer our guests much greater comfort while reducing the rush and waiting times of the old system. Personally, I cannot wait to sit in the new ‘Symphony’ premium gondola for the first time and take in the views of the Sesto Sundial.”
